Dental Anesthesiologist Faces License Loss After Patient’s Death

Tragically, a 60-year-old woman died from brain damage after undergoing anesthesia for a full-mouth dental procedure. The anesthesiologist now faces charges of gross negligence over the woman’s death and could lose his license.

The woman was treated at a celebrity dental clinic in Beverly Hills. The dentist. Dr. Kevin Sands, has treated many of the rich and famous, including Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, and Britney Spears.

The woman had paid thousands of dollars to get a mouth full of crowns and veneers. The woman, a mother of three, had traveled to the clinic with her two sisters on February 20, 2019. She was being treated when she went into cardiac arrest. One of the sisters heard a man say: “She has no pulse, she’s not breathing.” The sound of sirens then filled the room. Both sisters prayed for the woman.

The woman was taken to Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles. She spent 11 days in an intensive care unit before she died on March 3, 2019. After meeting with neurologists, the woman’s family found out that the woman had suffered brain damage after going without oxygen for too long.

The anesthesiologist is being investigated by the state dental board. He faces accusations of incompetence, negligence and unprofessional conduct. The state board is looking to revoke or suspend his dental license and general anesthesia permit.

The board alleges that the anesthesiologist did not provide an “accurate and complete” medical history for the woman, nor did he get her written informed consent before administering anesthesia. He also failed to document “complete and accurate monitoring” of the woman while delivering the anesthetic.

Approximately one hour after administering the anesthesia, the woman’s blood pressure and pulse measurements started decreasing. The anesthesiologist asked the dental assistant to stop work but failed to provide CPR quickly enough. In fact, he allegedly delegated CPR to a dental assistant with little experience, even though he had extensive training.

The woman was taken to the hospital and spent 11 days in intensive care before she was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury and taken off life support.
